The Controversial Ending to Ends of the Earth

Ends of the Earth by Tim Downs

If you’ve had the chance to read my latest novel all the way through to the end, you might be a little upset with me right now. I can’t say I blame you; after all, I took you on a three-hundred-and-fifty page thrill ride only to leave your car dangling over the edge of a cliff. “He can’t do this to me,” you might be saying to yourself right now, and maybe you’ve come to this blog site hoping to tell me so.

I knew the ending would be controversial. In fact, my editor advised me not to do it at all, but I thought the idea was just too good to pass up. I knew some readers would love it and some might hate it; I also knew that absolutely everyone would have a strong opinion about what should (and definitely should not) happen next.

That’s why I decided to allow my readers to go to my website and vote for the ending they prefer (http://timdowns.net). And that’s why I’ve created this blog post. This is a place for you to share your opinions about the story with other readers. This is your chance to explain to others why you voted the way you did. How do you think the story should end? Post your comment and tell the world.

If you haven’t finished Ends of the Earth yet, you’re not sure what I’m talking about here. That’s good—because I don’t want this blog post or comments posted by readers to spoil the ending for anyone. So before you click on the "Comments" link below, be warned:

SPOILER ALERT! THE FOLLOWING COMMENTS DISCUSS THE SURPRISE ENDING OF ENDS OF THE EARTH! READER BEWARE!

  1. I have read almost all your books and Ends OF The Earth was really great. I was so excited about it that I stayed up all night to finish it. I then went into shock to find out you left out one of the most important parts. I think Nick should go with Alena because they seem more alike. Kat seems to be too tame and calm for Nick. Alena wiil put excitement in his life which is what I think he needs.

  2. I found you in a post-book interview with Sibella Giorello (on my Kindle) and I am SO glad! I have the same complaint as others here…wish I could read a new Bug Man novel every week…:) I voted for Alena, and I knew I would do so before I read the alternate endings. I can really relate to Kathryn, and I think she will find someone else with no problem. I love the “under-dog” quality Alena has…and I like the fact that she put fear aside and became so vulnerable to Nick. I think they both have so much to learn about marriage and relationships…it would be fun to see that process.

I also wanted to say…I love animals, and I hate to see them hurt, of course, but I really like the way you have written them in. One thing I love about dogs is how they are willing to do ANYTHING for their alpha…and you’ve shown some wonderful, loyal creatures doing what they do best, for the good of man. You also made me love Alena in that she was willing to sacrifice her beloved dog to save Callie and Nick. Those moments in your books are beautiful to me.

I am planning to read your other books too, but I’m going to be watching for the next Bug Man book…:)

  3. Nick, being the very odd person that he is, does need people in his life, although he just might not feel free to admit it. However, the fact that Alena is also a bit odd, a bit of an outcast to society, I think they would be good for each other. Kathryn strikes me as the type of woman who will find herself a good man elsewhere, whereas Alena might not be able to feel that connection with anyone else except Nick.

Well, I discovered that I am way late in voting, but since I have read and really enjoyed five Tim Downs novels and I felt strongly about Alena, I thought it would be fun to vote, even though my vote will not count.

Tim, I am looking forward to the sequel to “Ends of the Earth.” I think, of the five of your books I have read, that this one was my favorite. Keep up the good work writing!

  4. I actually didn’t like either ending. Nick’s not a mushy romantic type and i felt like his character changed completely in both of the endings. I prefer him being the goofy, awkward character he is…not the one to show his emotions. I really enjoy your books Tim but these two endings didn’t fit…I was slightly disappointed. I chose he wouldn’t propose…but I gave the choice “He proposed to both, Hey its Nick” some thought b/c he’s rather quirky!

    • I agree, Nick is definitely not the “mushy romantic type.” But Nick is definitely unpredictable; he’s likely to do the last thing you think he would do, and that’s why I took his character in this direction. Nick is not the type to slowly come to grips with his emotions. He’s more likely to jump in there with both feet and figure out what happened later–which is what you’ll find him doing in the next Bug Man novel.

  5. It was a hard decision. I really like Alena. I think she could tolerate Nick better. They are both loners. But, after reading the alternate endings, I decided to go with Kathryn. I felt like he spoke more from the heart as if he were truely in love. I think Callie will do him some good too, maybe bring him closer to his human species. I think Alena should stick around. It wouldn’t be the same without her.

  6. SPOILER ALERT! THIS COMMENT DISCUSSES THE SURPRISE ENDING OF ENDS OF THE EARTH! READER BEWARE!
Hi! I know I am late for the vote but I have an alternative ending to your alternative endings…(if that makes any sense). As I was reading Ends of the Earth, I was sure I knew how it would end. I thought that both Kathryn and Alena would decide that they were better off without Nick at this point in his development. They would decide to live together on the farm property and help each other out. Alena was so great with Callie; she would reach her in a way that Kathryn never thought of. Alena would teach Kathryn how to communicate with Callie and interact on her terms similar to how she relates to her dogs. The two would become best friends. Kathryn could concentrate on the farm and Alena would move to the farm and train her dogs there. Maybe it’s only me, but I thought they would both decide that they deserved better than Nick is able to give. I imagined that later Nick would mature and possibly start dating Alena, but Kathryn would find someone too (maybe someone that Alena introduced her to that knew about dogs) so they would both be happy. I wonder if you ever thought of this possibility, and what you think of the idea.

    • I can see that you’re a natural born diplomat, Karen. Yes, it’s a very good idea, and in a real world filled with relatively healthy people it would be the best resolution for everyone involved–but what fun is that? Nick’s just not the kind of guy who does the healthy and sensible thing, and it’s a lot more interesting to watch him fumble along as he figures things out. It’s a great suggestion, though. I’ll pass it along to Kathryn; she’ll be glad you thought of her.

okay, it was Alena from the moment we met her in Less Than Dead! I never felt like any of the other ladies were quite right. Maybe I am tired of heroines who seem to be perfect and could attract any man’s attention. Now Alena has true character and if she could work with Callie and bring her out by using canine techniques, just think what she will accomplish with Nick! She knew she wanted him and she went for it! GO ALENA! Frankly, Nick would drive me nuts!!!!

  8. SPOILER ALERT! THIS COMMENT DISCUSSES THE SURPRISE ENDING OF ENDS OF THE EARTH! READER BEWARE!
Aww man I like both! Each had their own way of being “just right” for Nick. But I voted for Alena because I felt she would be devestated if it wasn’t her…I think Kathryn is a much stronger woman who can handle rejection better. Besides, she has a lot to think about right now (finding work, a new place to live, connecting with her daughter, etc).

P.S. I was GLAD to see both dogs lived! Thank you! lol

    Hola!

My vote is for Riley. She would totally have survived! She was sent flying far, far away, was found by some kindly folks who took care of her ’cause she has amnesia, and then Nick finds her and everyone is happy!

Since Riley doesn’t seem to be coming back, I voted for Alena. Though I love the idea of Nick being a dad to Callie, I don’t know he is ready to assume that kind of role. Alena is also just plain cool. JMO.

    Morgann

    • SPOILER ALERT! THIS COMMENT DISCUSSES THE SURPRISE ENDING OF ENDS OF THE EARTH! READER BEWARE!
I agree with you, I liked Riley! I wish she would have survived somehow. And I think Nick would be great with Callie. I’m hoping Nick ends us with Alena, but becomes “Uncle Nick” to Callie. I’m sure Kathryn and Alena can stay friends… (At least if he chooses Alena… Kathryn can get over him, but if it goes the other way, Alena would be just heartbroken.)

  10. SPOILER ALERT! THIS COMMENT DISCUSSES THE SURPRISE ENDING OF ENDS OF THE EARTH! READER BEWARE!
I would be happiest if Nick did not get married at this point. I think a marriage for Nick would be a great ending for the series, but I’m not ready for it to end.

If Nick must get married at this point, I would choose Alena simply because she is the more interesting of the two choices and she would actually be able to assist Nick in his work. I really can’t see Nick marrying someone who hates bugs.

After reading the book, I feel like Nick only thought about loving/choosing one of these two women simply because they “pushed” themselves onto him. I feel like he never would have thought about it otherwise.

Tim, thanks for writing such great books. I really come to care for your characters and I love how Donovan and Macy show up in Bug Man books and Nick shows up in their stories. I have read all your books and look forward to reading many more. Thanks for keeping it clean, exciting and educational.

  11. SPOILER ALERT! THIS COMMENT DISCUSSES THE SURPRISE ENDING OF ENDS OF THE EARTH! READER BEWARE!
Glad to see I wasn’t the only one who wanted to see Nick with Riley… However, I must say Alena seems a perfect match for Nick. Though I wasn’t too crazy about the dialog for either ending, I had to vote for Alena. She is odd, quirky and confident in her abilities even though she is socially awkward… just like Nick. I don’t think he is that good a match with Kathryn, and I absolutely can’t stand the thought of him breaking Alena’s heart. Alena needs him as much as he needs her!!!

  12. I guess my orignal comment did not get posted. That is ok!I brought your better half into it. It is not her fault! You yourself could not pick so you left it up to your readers. Nice ending! Just like Nick to leave you hanging!

    • Sorry for the delay, Catherine. Comments aren’t posted immediately; sometimes it takes a little time for me to get to them. Glad to have your comment.

  13. SPOILER ALERT! THIS COMMENT DISCUSSES THE SURPRISE ENDING OF ENDS OF THE EARTH! READER BEWARE!
I’m only fourteen years old — just became a Freshman — so I’m pretty confident I don’t have as much of an in-depth view on your book as the other adults that read your books. However, I have to say… your books are insane. GOOD insane. My mom, another one of your fans (Pattie), has been trying and failing for years to get me into the chick-flick books that my sisters are into. Your books are the only ones that we can relate to each other with. :) I voted Alena — just because I want to see how Nick copes with 37 dogs that could rip his throat out if he tests his wife. :)

    • It’s a pleasure to hear from you, Rachel. Any girl who picks the Bug Man over Chick Lit is Nick’s kind of girl! I hope you’ll comment again; your insights sound plenty deep to me.

  14. SPOILER ALERT! THIS COMMENT DISCUSSES THE SURPRISE ENDING OF ENDS OF THE EARTH! READER BEWARE!
I voted for Alena Savard. The very thought that she came out of her cocoon and earned a “Wow” made me smile. Nick usually does not work well on a communicative human level so this was a gold star on his forehead. It would be nice for him to take Human 101 and … with the relationship that he is developing with Alena. She might just be able to give it to him in small doses. I am sure there will be a lot of bug and dog analogies so they can talk out feelings on a human level (since they both are lacking in that area … Nick really trailing Alena.) Odd couples do have a special bond that may cause other to just scratch their head and wonder. I hope to see the realization of a need for Christ.

  15. SPOILER ALERT! THIS COMMENT DISCUSSES THE SURPRISE ENDING OF ENDS OF THE EARTH! READER BEWARE!
After reading the first few comments I was rethinking my vote for Alena, but by the end I was feeling more confident in my hopes (ever since finishing Less Than Dead) that they would end up together. We (my 14 year old daughter and I) are just excited to hear that there will be more of Nick Polchak! He has really “wormed” his way into our hearts and we want, no need! to see him happily married :) Will we ever see him come to Christ?

  16. Major complaint here…the books come out much too slowly…either that or I’ll have to adjust my reading pace to one page a week. What about one Bug Man book a month club?

    • I have to agree with you Larry. One Bug man book a year is not enough. I go through withdrawel. I have read all of the previous Bug Man books and PlagueMaker twice now.

    • I agree. I too can not get enough. Tim is so descriptive that I can actually see the characters and imagine the sounds of their voices, as if I were watching a movie. I would love to see his books on the big screen.

  17. SPOILER ALERT! THIS COMMENT DISCUSSES THE SURPRISE ENDING OF ENDS OF THE EARTH! READER BEWARE!
All this time I’ve been secretly waiting for Riley to pop out and say “surprise”. I really wanted him to marry Riley. HOWEVER since she wasn’t one of the choices I made the difficult decision to vote for Kathryn. Although Alena seems to be the perfect match and they would work perfectly together, I’m not convinced that they could be married to one another. Kathryn seems to be a alot more understanding and patient of who Nick is and knows she won’t be able to change him. I think she is more able to accept him with all his quirks than Alena, who will surely become so frustrated with him she’ll sic one of her dogs on him.

  18. SPOILER ALERT! THIS COMMENT DISCUSSES THE SURPRISE ENDING OF ENDS OF THE EARTH! READER BEWARE!
After Less than Dead, Alena is the obvious choice for me. Kathryn is great and all but i never saw her and nick together. like others have said, she’s just too human. Besides, after talking with the pastor, it sounds like she needs to work more on her relationship with her daughter before throwing another person into the mix. Kathryn’s tough on the inside and if she gets distracted by nick will she need to turn to the only thing that can really help her, GOD. Alena is tough on the outside, but is still vulnerable on the inside. to be rejected by another man at this point might just isolate her all over again. SO I voted Alena, and if she wins, Kathryn had better not be a bridesmaid b/c somehow that’s just wrong too.

  19. SPOILER ALERT! THIS COMMENT DISCUSSES THE SURPRISE ENDING OF ENDS OF THE EARTH! READER BEWARE!
I have read the last two books and in both I expected Nick to get together with Alena. It just seemed natural. Thanks for great reading.

  20. SPOILER ALERT! THIS COMMENT DISCUSSES THE SURPRISE ENDING OF ENDS OF THE EARTH! READER BEWARE!
I voted for Alena because she would be a better match for Nick. Katherine is afraid of bugs and bugs are Nicks whole life. I don’t think he is ready to be a father when he is barely able to admit that he is human. Besides I liked the quirkiness of Alena and would like to see her and Nick work together in another book.
I wonder what Nick’s mom would think of Alena?

    • That’s a great question, Mary. To tell you the truth, I never thought about it. What would Nick’s mom think? That will definitely show up in a future book!

      • SPOILER ALERT! THIS COMMENT DISCUSSES THE SURPRISE ENDING OF ENDS OF THE EARTH! READER BEWARE!
Oh thats right I forgot about Nick mom! She was hysterical! I’d like to see her again! I wonder if she would be a little afraid of Alena??

  21. SPOILER ALERT! THIS COMMENT DISCUSSES THE SURPRISE ENDING OF ENDS OF THE EARTH! READER BEWARE!
Nick’s life will be more interesting with Alena. We might go for Katherine in real life but when we are reading we want more adventure. You should have made it a threesome and added in the psychiatrist from “1st the dead” that would have really made it challenging.

Next book: Nick solves mysterious serial killings in apartment complex – ok I’m biased.

  22. SPOILER ALERT! THIS COMMENT DISCUSSES THE SURPRISE ENDING OF ENDS OF THE EARTH! READER BEWARE!
I think it has to be Alena for a number of reasons. First being: All of Kathrine’s husbands have died brutal deaths, and I want Nick to survive. Secondly, I think that Nick needs someone who is equally strange, like the woman in the second book(Can’t remember her name), and Kathrine is all to normal. Thirdly, there are plenty of guys out there who would go for Kathrine, Alena is a little strange for most people.

  23. SPOILER ALERT! THIS COMMENT DISCUSSES THE SURPRISE ENDING OF ENDS OF THE EARTH! READER BEWARE!
The Bug Man novels are very popular at our house; my husband and I have loved every one, and, in the last month, have sent four of them as gifts. I don’t want to see Nick married, ever! Maybe a selfish vote, but I like him just the way he is and am fearful that either of the women would be too strong-willed for him, even though he would be a great father for Callie. I’d hate to see him squashed like a bug by any woman! Much of his uniqueness is related to his independent and unorthodox lifestyle, and I hope to see more of that in future novels!

  24. SPOILER ALERT! THIS COMMENT DISCUSSES THE SURPRISE ENDING OF ENDS OF THE EARTH! READER BEWARE!
I picked Alena because she would be better for Nick and could help solve his mysteries also like her dogs I was glad that neither dog died that was a relief! I love your bug man novel keep them coming! :>)

  25. SPOILER ALERT! THIS COMMENT DISCUSSES THE SURPRISE ENDING OF ENDS OF THE EARTH! READER BEWARE!
I can’t pick. Based on the final chapters I think the Alena chapter was the more believable of the two, It felt like the Kathryn chapter was too abrupt and didn’t have the same flow as the rest of the book.
However, I would rather see Nick end up with Kathryn. I think the relationship between Nick and Callie could be huge in future books. I really enjoyed how the two of them, each with their own “disabilities”, seemed to relate to each other.

  26. SPOILER ALERT! THIS COMMENT DISCUSSES THE SURPRISE ENDING OF ENDS OF THE EARTH! READER BEWARE!
I voted for neither. The Kathryn chapter was weaker than the Alena one. Also, I know it was a bit in the character of Nick to blurt out his proposal without really thinking it through, but I didn’t care for it. If I had voted, it would probably have been for Kathryn because he seemed more focused on her, and there is the relation he has with Callie.

  27. SPOILER ALERT! THIS COMMENT DISCUSSES THE SURPRISE ENDING OF ENDS OF THE EARTH! READER BEWARE!
I voted for Alena. And I knew I would even before I read the alternate chapters. After reading these comments however, I must admit a good case has been made for Katherine and I could accept it should it be Katherine. But my vote still goes for Alena. She is unique as is Nick, and it is apparent in this book that she could help his transition from insect to insect/human:) And imagine their offspring!

As for the dogs, one dog getting shot and the the other running sacrificially towards the combine were tough scenes to read. At least they survived, though one leg short. I too would rather see a villain or two meet their fate rather than another dog.

Whatever the outcome, I can’t wait to read the next book!

  28. SPOILER ALERT! THIS COMMENT DISCUSSES THE SURPRISE ENDING OF ENDS OF THE EARTH! READER BEWARE!
I went with Alena for several reasons. I find her character more interesting and I think the dialog exchange between her and Nick is priceless. I’d like to have more of that. Katherine will find someone else, I’m not sure Alena will. I want her to be happy and catch a few breaks. I do think the dynamics between Katherine and Nick would have been pretty fun to follow though.

  29. SPOILER ALERT! THIS COMMENT DISCUSSES THE SURPRISE ENDING OF ENDS OF THE EARTH! READER BEWARE!
I have to say that, for me, Alena is the obvious choice. Not just for the fact that she and Nick are so compatible, but also because as I read the books I saw a deeper connection with Alena. Also as one comment stated above, in Katherine’s final chapter Nick did seem too human. I thought that Alena’s chapter was far more true to character of all involved. Thanks for writing such amazing books! I am looking forward to the next “Bug Man” novel.

  30. SPOILER ALERT! THIS COMMENT DISCUSSES THE SURPRISE ENDING OF ENDS OF THE EARTH! READER BEWARE!
Both my 16 year old son and I have enjoyed your books- we both voted for Alena but for different reasons. My son thought it was obvious that Alena would be Nick’s choice because they were both so alike. So speaks the voice of young ignorance. I voted for Alena- because she is good for him and he is good for her- you are right- they would drive “normal” people crazy! And Katherine is too “normal” although how she does it, is a mystery, given what life has thrown at her. Katherine needs and is more likely to come to Christ because of her ability to see her need. Then she needs a younger version of the Pastor’s character you presented in this last book for a husband to be all God has placed in her character. Because of Alena’s isolation and hurts Nick rises to the occasion to be better than he would be otherwise- he comes out of himself to meet her needs and the needs of others- she provides the backdrop where he can care. For Alena’s perspective Nick loves her in a way that is not threatening for her so she feels safer and has more freedom to grow and explore all she could be.

  31. SPOILER ALERT! THIS COMMENT DISCUSSES THE SURPRISE ENDING OF ENDS OF THE EARTH! READER BEWARE!
Well, it was nice to see at least one other male of this species comment on the ending (Larry above). I enjoy the series. It’s interesting, humorous, and suspenseful with a little romance thrown in. I can’t imagine Nick being married! And, I can’t imagine the hurt that the one not picked will feel. Maybe the one not picked could be swept off her feet by another character. Ok, ok, I voted for Alena because what she adds to the books with her dogs is great! Although I love the dynamic with Nick and Callie too. Tim, you’re going to have to solve this dilemma!

  32. SPOILER ALERT! THIS COMMENT DISCUSSES THE SURPRISE ENDING OF ENDS OF THE EARTH! READER BEWARE!
Alas, I voted for neither. I love both Kathryn and Alena almost as much as I love Nick, but I don’t think he’d make a very good husband. What if Nick runs into Elizabeth Woodbridge sometime in the future? I liked Elizabeth, too. Hey, it could happen, couldn’t it? Now if you and Kathy Reichs got Nick and Temperance Brennan (Temperance of the books, not Temperance of the TV show) together on the same case, that could be an interesting relationship. Well, whatever happens, I’m eagerly awaiting the next Bug Man novel!

  33. SPOILER ALERT! THIS COMMENT DISCUSSES THE SURPRISE ENDING OF ENDS OF THE EARTH! READER BEWARE!
Did your wife smack you when she finished reading this book? I’m curious as to who she picked—but since I’m a mom, I have a feeling she went with Katherine? But thinking along the lines of a writer and if you wanted to continue writing bugman books with an intense or suspensful plot–you might have gone with Alena, because I think Nick might have to go through some heart ache to prove he really is human.

    • I can’t speak for my wife, but I’ll tell you what I’ll do: I’ll ask her to write a guest post for this blog and she can tell you how she voted herself.

  34. SPOILER ALERT! THIS COMMENT DISCUSSES THE SURPRISE ENDING OF ENDS OF THE EARTH! READER BEWARE!
Is there a place where we can see a running tally of the votes? Tried to get on “Vote Now” but was denied since I had already voted. Thanks. GO ALENA!

  35. SPOILER ALERT! THIS COMMENT DISCUSSES THE SURPRISE ENDING OF ENDS OF THE EARTH! READER BEWARE!
First of all, what kind of idiot proposes to one woman in the presence of another? I think one who does not really want to get married. I voted for neither but if he has to choose–Alena is the obvious choice. They could work together on cases and both are quirky and eccentric. Plus her dogs really add a different dimension to the books. While we are on that subject; why do some of her dogs always wind up dead or maimed? THIS MUST STOP! (OK, sue me already, I am an animal lover)! Kill off aother villain or something. I was not happy with the corn/combine scene at the end of the book. Other than that, love all your books. Can’t wait for the next one. Hopefully with Nick and Alena together solving another case.

    • I had to laugh at your comment, “Kill off another villain or something.” Animal lovers are definitely a breed apart! In my novel Head Game I placed a dog in grave danger–along with several human beings. One reader wrote and told me that she had to skip to the end of the novel to find out if the dog would be all right!

  36. SPOILER ALERT! THIS COMMENT DISCUSSES THE SURPRISE ENDING OF ENDS OF THE EARTH! READER BEWARE!
I chose Alena. She is an oddball like Nick and I can see them working on cases together in the future. She would be able to understand his obsession with his work and become a part of it.
Kathryn is less flexible and would have a harder time making a life with Nick. I could see her putting more restrictions on him, especially since Callie is involved. She would want him around and participating in the family on a routine basis which is right and fair. I don’t see Nick fitting that mold and Kathryn getting very frustrated and disappointed in her marriage again.
Very interesting comment by Kristen about Nick having characteristics of someone on the Autism spectrum. That thought had crossed my mind too. It was interesting you chose to make Callie autistic. Did you see the connection while writing this?
I enjoyed the truths about love, marriage and God you subtly placed in the book. Good information. Not only did we get a great story, we received great wisdom too!

    • Thanks for the kind words, Bonnie. Yes, I thought about the autism connection with Nick, but not until I was writing this book. During my research I learned that the term “autism” refers to an entire spectrum of behaviors from very minor to very severe. Nick might very well be mildly autistic–maybe that’s why he connected with Callie so quickly.

  37. SPOILER ALERT! THIS COMMENT DISCUSSES THE SURPRISE ENDING OF ENDS OF THE EARTH! READER BEWARE!
I vote for Kathryn and Callie. They need him more and I can see them together better. I think she would be better for him and then there is Callie who he is good with.

  38. SPOILER ALERT! THIS COMMENT DISCUSSES THE SURPRISE ENDING OF ENDS OF THE EARTH! READER BEWARE!
Am I the only male to read your books? BTW, being a Penn State diehard, enjoy your references to the Nits. Alena for me as I believe the eccentric pair would be a great next novel combo. Will now give the book to the better half to read and vote. She’s the Kathryn type but will vote the way I tell her like any dutiful wife 😉

  39. SPOILER ALERT! THIS COMMENT DISCUSSES THE SURPRISE ENDING OF ENDS OF THE EARTH! READER BEWARE!
I have thoroughly enjoyed all of your books, so I devoured this book. When I read the last page I had to keep myself from looking at the end to see who Nick was talking to. Then to my surprise I still didn’t know. I’ve read both endings and at first I wouldn’t put it past Nick to propose to both, but I couldn’t live with that. So I picked Kathryn. I was impressed with how Callie and Nick bonded. I think Kathryn would give (or attempt to give) balance to Nick. I think they have a better chance of having a “normal” relationship than Nick would have with Alena. I think Kathryn has a better chance of bringing Nick out of his exoskeleton. Keep on writing, you have become one of my favorite authors

  40. SPOILER ALERT! THIS COMMENT DISCUSSES THE SURPRISE ENDING OF ENDS OF THE EARTH! READER BEWARE!
I voted for Kathryn for the same reasons Mary M did. Because of the comment about Barbara and the fact that Noah said they were opposites and Barbara completed him. Also when they were out in the corn field and the combine was closing in on Kathryn and Callie, Nick was willing to sacrifice himself for them because he couldn’t choose who to save. I think it showed he had developed an affection for Callie also. I love Nick’s quirks and I think that Kathryn completes him in a way that Alena could not. Alena is a good person but not the right one for Nick. People who are so much alike don’t always get along for long periods of time. I know that the vote is for Alena but Kathryn is the best choice. I have read every one of your books and they are awesome. Looking forward to the next one.

  41. This a work of fiction where anything can happen, like at the end Nick could wake up from a dream but instead: 1. Can Nick still be himself with the responsibility of a family? He has to really grow up. 2. He can’t be the same especially when a child is involved. If he were to stay absentminded or oblivious to what is going on, he would be now considered irresponsible, thus taking away from his character. 3. Folks got emotionally hurt in this story, Nick led both women on. 4. If Kathryn wins – Alena has lost. She struggled so hard to come out of her shell. What will happen to her? Oh, you can write a book about a wonderful guy that really likes dogs and living in the woods, and he finds a body when he is out hunting and in the process of solving the mystery falls head over hills for Alena – just not too mushy. If Alena wins, not only is Kathryn let down BUT so is a child, ouch. You asked. Truly I really liked this story, I like all of your books. Besides my friend Jan wants Nick. Jan is reading your book now. You will be hearing from her when she gets done.

  42. SPOILER ALERT! THIS COMMENT DISCUSSES THE SURPRISE ENDING OF ENDS OF THE EARTH! READER BEWARE!
Wow, everyone else has these well-formed opinions about why they voted the way they did. Guess I’m the odd one out. I couldn’t decide who to vote for, so I flipped a coin and went with Alena. Part of me is still rooting for Kathryn, but I like Alena better. I’m a dog person myself so maybe that’s why I want to see her some more. Not that THAT had anything to do with the outcome of my coin-flipping, of course.

Mr Downs, If you were in striking distance I would punch you in the nose (only kidding). I am not usually a violent person, but what a way to end a book! I am very blessed to have a kind and understanding husband, because he got what you should have. Actually I have enjoyed all of your books just not any of the endings to this one. Will we be hearing from Nick again?

    • Easy, Donna! I’m glad I’m not within striking distance right now. You didn’t like any of the possible endings? I thought I gave enough possible options to satisfy everybody! You’d better post another comment and tell everyone what sort of ending you’d prefer. And don’t worry, you’ll hear from Nick again.

I wanted to vote for Alena because she has no one but voted for Kathryn who seems to have more of a past with Nick. I think Kathryn would love a father for Callie and her and Nick get along very well. Kathryn knows what is like to be a wife and mom so she is a step ahead. Not sure Alena will take to being tied to a man very well.

  45. All I want to know is the ending – when will you tell us?

    • Sorry, Dolly, but I won’t know the ending until readers tell me. As for when, the book just came out, so I’ll probably give people two or three months to cast their votes before declaring a winner. Stay tuned!

      • I read the book too late to vote. Can’t wait to see who he chose. I am hoping for Alena. What is the name of the new book?

I voted for Kathryn and Callie to have Nick. They seemed to need him more. Kathryn, I think, has a bigger heart and more to offer a guy like Nick. Nick has a lot to offer them, too. I think Nick’s heart is big enough for an autistic child; plus she’s already a bug collector, and a protege.
Kathryn owning a home in the same area makes sense; Nick wouldn’t have to leave NCSU.

I really enjoyed all the Bug Man books. It was awesome to be re-united with Kathryn and see what has happened to her and I’m also excited that Alena is back too.
Um… I voted for Alena, first of all because that’s who I wanted Nick to fall in love with. I kind of read between the lines of Less Than Dead, and second, because the ending written for Kathryn made him sound a little too human too soon, since he’s always considered himself a part of the insect species.
I seriously am hoping for a book six with Nick and Alena… What happens now Tim?

  48. I have not read this yet but after reading this i think i will!!!!!

I have purchased each of your books within a month or so of when they came out -right from the first one. One thing I have always wondered about was whether you purposely gave Nick characteristics on the Autism Spectrum. Having two daughters on the spectrum, I have appreciated seeing these characteristics given to the hero in these stories. Too often people don’t look past the oddball factor to see the person behind the behaviors. Of course I also loved the addition of Callie in Ends of the Earth, and one of the main reasons I voted for the Katherine ending was because I would love to see the dynamics of a Father/Daughter relationship between Nick and Callie.

I’m not sure if this is where I am supposed to share my thoughts about the two women in Nick’s life, Alena and Kathryn, and why I voted for one and not the other to marry Nick. Here goes: Alena is stunningly beautiful and independent, and definitely an alpha female. Kathryn is beautiful and practical and responsible. I go back to Noah’s conversation with Nick in Chapter 29 where Nick says he wants someone like Barbara (Noah’s wife), or at least someone who will be like Barbara in 30 years. Alena will never be a Barbara no matter how much time goes by. She and Nick would be good together for a while, but in the daily grind I think they would fall apart. Now Kathryn I can see turning into Barbara a lot sooner than 30 years down the road. That’s why I chose Kathryn even though I knew Alena was way out ahead of her in the vote.
